Project Overview
This is a recurring maintenance project that involves asphalt resurfacing on various streets throughout Iowa City each year. In addition to resurfacing, this project generally includes storm intake repairs, repair of curb and gutter as needed, and replacement of curb ramps to meet current ADA standards.
The streets scheduled to be resurfaced in 2022 are:
- Taylor Drive from Highway 6 to 2107 Taylor Drive
- Bancroft Drive from Tracy Lane to 2119 Bancroft Drive
- Crosby Lane from Sycamore Street to Bancroft Drive
- Rundell Street from Sheridan Avenue to Jackson Avenue
- Lower Muscatine Road from South 1st Avenue to Fairmeadows Boulevard
- Bloomington Street from Governor Street to Dodge Street
Each location has a section below describing schedule and impacts on residents. This webpage will be updated with traffic alerts as the project progresses. To sign up to receive project notifications by email or text alert, visit icgov.org/e-subscriptions and select Asphalt Resurfacing 2022.
General Outline of Work
The following is a general outline of the work that can be expected at each site. The actual order and duration of work performed will vary based on the existing conditions of the road.
- Phase 1: The existing road surface is milled and removed. This process is noisy and creates dust, so we suggest residents keep windows and doors closed if possible during this time. After surface removal, a new 1.5β layer of asphalt is installed to stabilize the road for traffic. During installation of the base layer, the Contractor will need to keep traffic from the roadway for at least 30 minutes to allow cooling. Approximate duration: 2 days
- Phase 2: Street patching, curb and gutter repairs, and installation of new ADA-compliant sidewalk curb ramps will begin after base installation. Curb ramp replacements generally occur at all intersection corners within the project limits. Sidewalk traffic will be rerouted during the work. Approximate duration: 2-3 weeks
- Phase 3: The final 1.5β layer of asphalt is installed following street patching, curb repairs, and curb ramp installation. During the installation of the final layer, the Contractor will need to keep traffic from the roadway for at least 30 minutes to allow cooling. Approximate duration: 2 days
- Phase 4: Once all other work on the project has been completed, the Contractor will seed and mulch the parkway areas disturbed by the project. Approximate duration: 2 days
