The public is invited to attend the 14th Annual Human Rights Youth Awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 10, 2017. The event, sponsored by the Iowa City Human Rights Commission, will be held at the Englert Theatre, 220 E. Washington Street, beginning at 7 p.m. There is no fee to attend.

More than 50 area youth who were nominated by members of the public for their promotion of and contributions to human rights causes locally or globally will be recognized. Iowa City Mayor Jim Throgmorton will deliver brief remarks at the ceremony. Students from Regina, City High, West High, Van Allen and Willowwind will receive awards. Sabrena Shields, Student Family Advocate at North Central Junior High, will be presented with the Youth Ally Award. This award recognizes an adult, who through their work and trust in area youth, has empowered youth in the Iowa City area.
