Now that the official start of winter is only weeks away, it's time to seriously start thinking about buttoning up the house for the cold weather season. To help out, the City of Iowa City is offering zero-interest loans of up to $4,000 to income-eligible homeowners for energy-efficient improvements such as new furnaces or upgrades to heating systems, new windows, insulation, and/or weatherproofing.

To qualify, applicants must meet income guidelines established by HUD. For a one-person household, gross annual income must not exceed $46,000; for a two-person household, $52,600; three-person, $59,150; four-person, $65,700; and five-person, up to $71,000 per year. Homes must be single-family, owner-occupied residences located in Iowa City, and must have enough equity to cover the loan.

The program runs through March 1, 2017, but funds are limited. Homeowners who are interested in applying are urged to do so as soon as possible. Applications and additional information about the program may be found on the Housing Rehab web page,
