Road Closure on Court Street will detour Transit route

Effective today, Tuesday, July 30, 2019, Court Street is closed from First Avenue to Upland Avenue to facilitate installation of water main. A detour is posted and access to residences in the area will be maintained. It is anticipated that normal traffic will resume by Friday, Aug. 16, 2019.

Iowa City Police Officer and shoplifting suspect injured during officer-involved shooting incident

On Monday, July 29, 2019, at approximately 3:29 p.m., officers with the Iowa City Police Department responded to a shoplifting complaint at a business located at 11 Highway 1 West.

A suspect was located in a nearby area, away from the business. As the investigation was unfolding, an Iowa City Police Officer was shot multiple times with a weapon and received injuries to his face. The weapon was later identified as a BB gun. The officer also fired his weapon, striking the suspect. The officer and suspect were each transported to a local hospital and are in stable condition.

From 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 1, 2019, at 579 McCollister Boulevard, the party will feature a wide range of water-based activities, and much more. Activities will take place near the picnic shelter closest to the playground.

Parking will be banned on a stretch of East College Street on Wednesday, July 31, 2019, and Thursday, Aug. 1, to allow for pothole repair and street sweeping.

East College from South Van Buren Street to Muscatine Avenue will be closed to parking starting at 7 a.m. Wednesday. Any cars still parked on the north side of the street will be towed at that time. Cars parked on the south side of the road will be towed starting at 7 a.m. Thursday.

Temporary "no parking" signs will go up in the area Monday, July 29, 2019.

Mercer Park Aquatic Center closed Thursday-Sunday

The Mercer Park Aquatic Center will be closed Thursday, July 25, 2019, through Sunday, July 28.

This closure is due to the relocation of the Iowa Swimming Inc (ISI) Long Course State Championships from the University of Iowa Campus Recreation and Wellness Center to the Mercer Park Aquatic Center. The swim meet's location change was caused by unforeseen circumstances at the UI pool. Thursday morning swim lessons at MPAC are moving to City Park Pool (200 Park Road). City Park Pool and the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center pools will be open as regularly scheduled.

ICPD investigates multiple vehicle vandalisms

On July 23, 2019, Iowa City Police officers took numerous reports of car vandalism throughout Iowa City.

At the time of this release, officers took 17 separate reports of car windows broken out that were apparently shot with the use of a BB gun or pellet gun.

The Coralville Police Department responded to similar calls throughout the early morning hours and report approximately 37 vehicles with car windows were shot out.

The attached photo is of a vehicle captured on surveillance video that is suspected of being in involved in the vandalism.

A story wall entitled "A Mark was Made" has been recently installed in the Black Hawk Mini Park area of the Downtown Pedestrian Mall. The wall illuminates the impact that 17 Iowa Citians have had on the City from the 1830s until today.

The piece is located in the southwest corner of the Black Hawk Mini Park of the downtown Pedestrian Mall. it is adjacent to the Paul Hellen Building, which houses the Iowa Artisans Gallery, and the 110 S. Dubuque Street building, home to Buzz Salon.
