Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) Chief Sam Hargadine swore in Jeffery Schmidt as a Police Officer during a ceremony at Emma J. Harvat Hall on Thursday, Jan. 7. Officer Schmidt, 26, is originally from Oxford, Iowa, and graduated from Loras College, in Dubuque, Iowa, in 2013 with a B.A. in criminal justice and English. Prior to employment with the ICPD, Schmidt was employed as a bus driver with the City of Dubuque RTA and the Dubuque School District, in addition to being a childcare supervisor with the YMCA of Dubuque. Road Construction - Dubuque Street

Beginning at 9 a.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 7, Dubuque Street will be reduced to one lane of southbound traffic from Taft Speedway to Park Road. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate utility work in the area. It is anticipated that normal traffic will resume by the end of the day.

Motorists are to take note of this lane reduction and allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.

Several bus routes to detour Friday, Jan. 8 due to construction on S. Clinton Street

The outbound Lakeside, outbound Mall and inbound Cross Park bus routes will detour on Friday, Jan. 8 due to construction work on S. Clinton Street between Burlington Street and Court Street. The detours will be in place until S. Clinton Street reopens to normal traffic at approximately noon.

Weather permitting, from 6 a.m. until noon on Friday, Jan. 8, Clinton Street will be closed to traffic from Burlington Street to Court Street. This closure is necessary to facilitate the construction of a building in the area.

Iowa City Police Department warns of recent circulation of counterfeit money

The Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) is alerting area residents and retailers of counterfeit U.S. currency. There have been numerous recent incidences of counterfeit $100 bills being circulated through the community.

On Friday, Jan. 1, the ICPD took a single report of a counterfeit $100 bill being passed at a local business. Since then, the ICPD has taken two additional reports of counterfeit $100 bills passed at other area businesses.

The serial numbers on the counterfeited $100 bills reported to the Iowa City Police Department are:

Recreation Center hours change

In order to provide a higher level of customer service to patrons throughout the evening and weekend hours, as well as bring the hours of operation for the City's two recreation facilities into alignment and eliminate confusion for the public, the Iowa City Recreation Division is amending hours of operation at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center and Mercer Park Aquatic Center / Scanlon Gym. The following schedules will be implemented Jan. 2, 2016:
