City announces street closures and transit route changes for Iowa Arts Festival

The Iowa Arts Festival kicks off Iowa City’s summer festival season from Friday, June 3 through Sunday, June 5, 2016, bringing artists and their work, live music, a parade, food vendors and all kinds of fun to Downtown Iowa City for the 33rd consecutive year.

Street closures

The following Downtown streets will be closed and will remain closed until approximately midnight after the conclusion of the festival on Sunday:

The upcoming Iowa Arts Festival in Downtown Iowa City will include two events coordinated and supported by the City's Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC): the Kidz Tent and Poetry in Public readings. The Iowa Arts Festival, part of Iowa City's Summer of the Arts program, is scheduled June 3-5, 2016. Summer 2016 Party in the Park schedule announced

Connect with friends, family and neighbors this summer at Party in the Park. The 2016 season begins Thursday, June 2 at Glendale Park, located at 1250 E. Jefferson Street. Sidewalk Closures – Iowa City Gateway Project

Beginning Tuesday, May 31, 2016, the sidewalk on the south side of Park Road between Riverside Drive and Dubuque Street will be closed due to construction activity for the Iowa City Gateway Project.

Additionally, the sidewalk on the west side of Dubuque Street between Park Road and Brown Street will experience periodic closures for utility work in the area. A detour route using the Hancher Pedestrian Bridge will be posted. Periodic sidewalk closures should be anticipated in these locations throughout the construction season of 2016. Iowa City Recycling and Senior Center staff have partnered on a series of classes designed to help area residents learn more about opportunities for reducing, reusing, recycling and composting. The series will run on Friday afternoons in June beginning June 3, 2016, at the Senior Center, 28 S. Linn Street. There is no cost to attend the classes and all ages are welcome. Weather permitting, on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, construction will begin on the Iowa City Gateway Project, and includes Park Road and Dubuque Street.

Park Road improvements, from the Iowa River to Holt Ave. will begin immediately, and will continue through early September. Lane shifts should begin on Park Road beginning Tuesday, May 31. During this time, through-traffic on Park Road will be maintained.

The City of Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce the opening of the Mercer Park Farmers Market, which will take place May 31, 2016 through August 30, 2016 from 3-6 p.m. on Tuesdays next to Mercer Park,1317 Dover Street.
