Traffic patters are changing while work on the Washington Streetscape Project progresses.
Beginning Monday, Aug. 1, 2016, northbound traffic on Dubuque Street will close between Iowa Avenue and Washington Street. Southbound traffic on Dubuque Street will remain open.
Additionally, Washington Street will close to westbound traffic between Linn and Dubuque Streets, while eastbound traffic on Washington Street will remain open.
These lane closures are needed for work on the ongoing Washington Streetscape Project.
The Washington Streetscape project is part of a larger Downtown and Pedestrian Mall Streetscape Plan. The project will give Washington Street a fresh, updated look while also updating aging underground infrastructure, which is needed following a large, destructive water main break in 2013.
It is anticipated that this work will be completed and Dubuque Street will reopen to traffic Aug. 26, 2016. Westbound traffic on Washington Street (Between Linn Street and Dubuque Street) will resume when the project is finished and is estimated to be completed in October 2016.
A reminder that all Iowa City Transit buses will return to normal service and will resume using the transit interchange located at the intersection of Washington Street and Clinton Street on Wed. August 3, 2016. Operational details can be found in a recently released article.
Also, people can access their favorite businesses on Washington Street throughout construction. Several special initiatives and programs are being planned by the Downtown District in conjunction with construction. To learn more visit downtowniowacity.com.
