Volunteers are needed the next four Sundays to help remove trash, invasive species and woody debris along the Iowa River Trail. These efforts help reduce flooding, erosion and improve water quality.

Those interested should sign-up in advance on the City of Iowa City Stormwater Volunteer Opportunities Facebook page.

The first clean-up is set for Sunday, Oct. 9 from noon to 3 p.m. Assignments will be distributed shortly before noon at the Streets Division Parking lot, 3800 Napoleon Lane, Iowa City.

Volunteers should come prepared to get dirty. Wear long pants, long sleeves and closed toe shoes or boots. Hats are recommended. The City will provide tools, gloves and drinking water.

Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a liability form.

Clean-up events are also tentatively scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 16, 23 and 30. Look for additional information on the volunteer Facebook page.

These events will occasionally be canceled due to weather, volunteer shortages or other unforeseen issues. Be sure to check the volunteer Facebook page after 10 a.m. the morning of the event to be sure it is happening as scheduled.

For more information on this and other clean-up events, contact Public Works Information Coordinator Carol Sweeting at 319-541-2385 or carol-sweeting@iowa-city.org
