According to Crime Prevention Officer Ashten Hayes, the Iowa City Police Department is receiving numerous calls regarding scams aimed at the elderly, especially those in nursing homes.

Financial exploitation is defined by Iowa Statute as “the act or process of taking unfair advantage of an individual or taking assets or resources for your own profit or gain. This includes the use of undue influence, harassment, duress, deception or false representation”.

Television and computer monitor ban goes into effect Jan. 3 at Iowa City Landfill

Beginning Jan. 3, 2017, the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center will start to enforce a landfill ban on computer monitors and televisions. The City Council recently passed a resolution enacting the ban to reduce the amount of hazardous and toxic substances in the landfill and decrease future environmental liability. Currently, around 375 tons of monitors and televisions are deposited in the landfill each year.

WORK DELAYED: The switch to the northbound lanes on Dubuque Street has been a little delayed, but is now underway. It is expected to be fully moved over by the end of the day Thurs. Dec. 22, 2016. Also, Brown Street is now open, but utility work is still being done on Kimball.

The good intentions of some area residents have led to some not-so-good outcomes on South Gilbert Street / Sand Road in Iowa City.

A flock of wild turkeys has taken up residence in the timber on the east side of Sand Road, north of the softball diamonds near the railroad tracks. Reports indicate that some people have begun feeding the turkeys or tossing food to them from their vehicles, which has created a dangerous situation for the turkeys and for other drivers, says Liz Ford, Iowa City Animal Services Supervisor.

The threat of extremely cold temperatures this weekend has caused the Iowa City Human Rights Commission to reschedule a program originally set for Sunday at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center.

“Know your Rights: Spousal and Partner Abuse Laws and Resources” was scheduled to be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016. Since the high temperature that day is predicted to be below zero, the event will be rescheduled. A new date has not yet been set.

Iowa City Police team up with Bruegger's on food drive for Crisis Center

The Iowa City Police Department and local Bruegger’s Bagels stores have teamed up on a food collection drive to benefit the Crisis Center food bank.

“A lot of people need a little extra help this time of year,” said Henri Harper, the Police Department’s Community Outreach Assistant. “Between the holidays and heating their homes, budgets are stretched about as far as they can go. We want to help the Crisis Center fill its shelves to make sure people don’t go hungry.”
