First snow of the New Year brings reminder to clear sidewalks of snow, ice

With the first snowfall of 2023 ending around noon on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, residents should be prepared to clear sidewalks of snow and ice.

Sidewalks in Iowa City must be cleared within 24 hours of a one-inch or greater snowfall, or after any accumulation of ice has ended, for sidewalks to be used safely by pedestrians. Property owners who do not remove snow and ice in this timeframe may be subject to fines.

Insulation grant for Iowa City residents available

Iowa City is now offering a grant for income-qualified homeowners that covers the full cost of increasing the amount of insulation in their homes. All the costs are covered by the City directly.

Grant eligibility

Income limits to qualify for Iowa City homeowners are as follows:

One-person household: $61,050 Two-person household: $69,800 Three-person household: $78,500 Four-person household: $87,200 Five-person household: $94,200

The City of Iowa City's Office of Equity and Human Rights is hosting a complimentary fair housing training on service and emotional support animals under the Fair Housing Act and Americans with Disabilities Act. Analysis of Iowa River samples completed following Marengo explosion

The Iowa River sample results from State Hygienic Laboratory (SHL) taken by the City of Iowa City Water Division in response to the C6-Zero facility explosion show no reportable detection of contaminants.

The analyses performed by the SHL are for compounds associated with petroleum products such as gasoline and diesel fuel.

The Water Division will continue to test the river weekly for the next three weeks.

The Iowa City Police Department welcomed a new officer Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022, during a ceremony in Emma Harvat Hall.

Officer Mahlan Sharf is from Cedar Rapids and previously served with the United States Marine Corps. Officer Sharf will attend the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy beginning Jan. 3, 2023. Upon graduation, Officer Sharf will participate in the police department's field training program.
