City of Iowa City administrative offices and other facilities will be closed Thursday, Nov. 11, 2021, in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.

Please note that trash, yard waste, and recycling will be collected on Veterans Day. See details below.

To honor those who have served, Transit is offering complimentary rides to veterans and their families on the holiday. Riders are asked to show a military ID or other identification that indicates veteran status. 


Other office closures and schedules for the holiday include: 

Airport: Office closed. Jet Air will be open.

Cemetery: Office closed. Grave decorations: Beginning Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021, artificial wreaths, artificial flowers, or other decorations may be placed on graves for Veterans Day or for the holidays. These materials may remain in place through the end of February. If not claimed, they will be removed. 

Landfill and Recycling Center: Closed.

Library: Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

ICPL Bookmobile: Not in service. 

Parking: Normal operations.

Parks and Recreation: Administrative offices closed. 

  • Holiday pool hours are: 
    • Mercer Park Aquatic Center Pool – Closed for repairs.
    • Robert A. Lee Recreation Center Pool – 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for lap swim. 
  • Recreation Center hours:
    • Robert A. Lee Recreation Center: 6:15 a.m. to 9 p.m.
    • Mercer Park Aquatic Center & Scanlon Gym: 6:15 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Police: Administration and Records offices closed. Patrol and station masters on duty.

Refuse, Recycling, and Yard Waste: Normal operations. 

Senior Center: Closed. 

Streets: The City's Leaf Vacuum Program will operate. More at www.icgov.org/leafvacuum.

Transit: Normal operations and free rides will be available for veterans and their families on fixed-route City buses and Johnson County SEATS on Veterans Day. For more info, call 319-356-5151.

Water: Office closed. For water emergencies, call the 24-hour emergency number at 319-356-5166.

City offices and operations will return to normal schedules and services on Friday, Nov. 12, 2021.
