The Iowa City Fire Marshal has completed its investigation into the fire that occurred Friday, Feb. 16, 2018, at Republic Services, 817 S. Capitol St. The investigation found that the area of origin and the cause of the fire are classified as "undetermined."

The Iowa City Fire Department is investigating a fire that occurred at 817 S. Capitol St. 

Firefighters responded Friday, Feb. 16 at 4:17 p.m., to a report of a business on fire at the corner of Benton and Capitol Street.  

Initial arriving crews found a business heavily involved with a working interior fire. The fire was under control in approximately 2 hours after arrival. The fire was contained to the building of origin. Damage estimates to the building and contents is not available at this time.

The Iowa City Fire Department was assisted by off duty firefighters from Iowa City, fire departments from Coralville, Hills, Riverside, Lone Tree, Swisher, Solon, Tiffin, and West Branch. The Iowa City Fire Department was also assisted by the Iowa City Police Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Iowa City Water Department, and MidAmerican Energy Company. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
