Clear your sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall in Iowa City

A reminder, sidewalks must be cleared within 24-hours of a one-inch or greater snowfall, or after any accumulation of ice has ended, for sidewalks to be used safely by pedestrians.Those who do not remove snow and ice may be fined.

Sidewalk policy

Property owners are responsible for the ice and snow removal from all sidewalks that abut their private property.

The entire width of the sidewalk must be cleared down to concrete. Renters should check their leases to see if their landlord has transferred the responsibility of snow and ice removal to them.

Public Library

The Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St., is available for people to stay warm while starting a new book or browsing a variety of materials for check out. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday - Thursday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Senior Center

The Senior Center will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and all are welcome to enjoy the warm and welcoming environment.

Documentary screening showcases Iowa City Civil Rights trip

An Iowa City-made documentary about students traveling to the South to learn about the Civil Rights movement will be held as part of a celebration of Black History Month.

The screening will be held at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020 at the Iowa City Public Library's Meeting Room A.

For a decade, a small organization has taken a group of Iowa City students on a trip to the South to learn about our nation's checkered past when it comes to racial equality.

A new piece of public art celebrating the Iowa City Farmers Market has been added to the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp, 415 E. Washington St.

The artwork was created by local artist Sara Montgomery and was installed Friday, Feb. 7, 2020. It serves as a symbol marking the location where the Farmers Market operates every Wednesday and Saturday from May to October each year.

The work includes a central Farmers Market design that rests above the north-facing entrance of the ramp, featuring items that can be found at the market: tomatoes, corn, bread, flowers, coffee, eggs....

Robert A. Lee Recreation Center temporarily closed Friday

The Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert St., will be temporarily closed starting at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14, 2020, for building maintenance.

The recreation center will be open to the public in the morning prior to the closure from 6:15 to 10 a.m.

Maintenance and repairs to a men’s restroom require all water to the building to be shut down. The pool, drinking fountains, showers, restrooms, sinks, and all other water sources will not be operational during the closure.

In September 2019 the Iowa City Council authorized the creation of a new, 11-member Climate Action Commission. After an application and selection period, the members of the new commission met for the first time in December 2019.

Members are: Madeleine Bradley, John Fraser, Stratis Giannakouros with the University of Iowa, Grace Holbrook, Kasey Hutchinson, GT Karr, Matt Krieger as Commission Chair, Jesse Leckband representing MidAmerican Energy, Katie Sarsfield, Becky Soglin, and Eric Tate.

Iowa’s athletes have long impacted their teams, communities, and the sports they played.

African American athletes did so while facing off against more than just the opposing team. They fought for the right to equal treatment on and off the field.

The Washington Street entrance to Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2020.

The closure allows for the installation of a Farmers Market art installation on and around the parking ramp.

Visitors can still enter and exit the parking ramp on the College Street entrance, or the entrance off of Burlington Street and through the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center’s parking lot.
