Update: Thursday, June 28, 2018
New curbside carts are available for recycling and organic materials. Any curbside customer in Iowa City can reserve a 65-gallon recycling cart or either a 95-gallon or 25-gallon cart for organics (food and yard waste) for curbside collection. There is no additional cost for these carts as it is included with monthly utility bills.
Cart purchases and delivery are based on budget and staff time. Wait times will vary.
Reserve your carts by submitting an online form or call 319-356-5151.
95-gallon organics carts and 65-gallon recycling carts will be delivered to homes; however, 25-gallon carts will need to be picked up by residents during special event pick up times.
25-gallon organics carts
Obtain your reserved 25-gallon cart during special pick up events at the Public Works Complex, 3800 Napoleon Lane. Pull alongside the red building and provide a copy of your utility bill for proof of address.
The next pick-up events are scheduled:
- Wednesday, July 18, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Tuesday, August 14, 4 to 6 p.m.
Free kitchen countertop compost containers will also be available for residents to take home during these events.
95-gallon organics carts
The 95-gallon organics carts will be delivered to households that request them. The first truckload of carts has been delivered. The demand for these carts has been significant and additional carts are being purchased and will be delivered upon arrival. The City will continue to order carts based on budget. Wait times will vary.
65-gallon recycling carts
Larger 65-gallon recycling carts will be delivered to households that request them. The first phase of cart delivery has begun and will continue as staff time allows throughout the rest of summer.
Yard waste, food waste, and other compostable items such as paper napkins in contact with food or pizza boxes are allowed in City organics carts and can be mixed with yard waste. For more information about accepted items, view the Food Waste handout. To keep carts clean, place food waste in newspaper or ASTM D6400 certified-compostable bags before placing in curbside carts.
Residents do not need an official cart to participate in the program and can instead opt to use their own personal upright container for organics collection (20-35 gallons in size, limit of 50 pounds). Yard waste stickers are no longer necessary.
