Original press release from Dec. 12, 2022:

At approximately 2 p.m., Iowa City Police responded to a welfare check at the Court Street Parking Ramp bus depot. Information received by police indicated a man was possibly armed and that a woman and children were involved.

Responding officers encountered a man, woman, and children inside the bus depot. Upon seeing the officers, the man made threatening comments and fled with the woman into the parking ramp. Iowa City Police followed the man and woman into the ramp and attempted to establish communication with the man, who appeared to be armed and continued to make threatening comments.

During this time, a perimeter around the area was established, community members were advised to shelter in place, and staff were evacuated from the parking ramp.

Despite efforts to de-escalate the situation by crisis negotiators, the man shot himself. Aid was immediately rendered at the scene and the man was taken via ambulance to an area hospital for treatment. The man is in stable condition and no other injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation and no other information is available. Iowa City Police were assisted at the scene by the Iowa City Fire Department, Johnson County Ambulance, Johnson County Sheriff's Office, University of Iowa Department of Public Safety, and the Coralville and University Heights police departments.
