The bike races loop around the historic Old Capitol using Washington Street, Madison Street, Jefferson Street, Clinton Street, Iowa Avenue, Dubuque Street and connects again on Washington Street. Races begin at 9 a.m. and finish in the afternoon around 4 p.m. with a free kids race taking place at noon.

New carts increase recycling participation in Iowa City

The City of Iowa City rolled out new recycling carts in December of 2018, and since then, the community has seen promising increases in recycling.

Last month, recycling tonnage increased by over 30% more material than this same time last year. The new carts have spurred excitement, and possibly even some new participants, with the larger containers on wheels making it easier to recycle more material.

Gas leak repairs in Downtown Iowa City will close a lane of traffic on Burlington Street Friday, April 5, 2019, and are expected to impact morning commuters.

A gas leak was discovered Thursday night in the outside eastbound lane of the 20 block of West Burlington Street, just east of Burlington's intersection with South Madison Street. The leak was located just south of the University of Iowa College of Education building and just east of the UI Campus and Recreation and Wellness Center.

The City of Iowa City is looking for your input on a major future construction project that will transform Dodge Street from Governor to Burlington.

A public open house for a project that will repave a 1.2 mile stretch of Dodge Street will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at Emma Harvat Hall in City Hall, 410 E. Washington St. Though the two-year project is not scheduled to start until 2023, the City is looking for your input in the early stages of this project.

Travel Alert - Gilbert Street

Beginning today, March 21, 2019, Gilbert Street is reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction between College Street and Washington Street to facilitate the construction of a building in the area. It is anticipated normal traffic will resume by April 3rd.

Motorists are to take note of this work and allow extra travel time as delays will occur. As always, caution should be exercised when driving through all construction areas.

City of Iowa City crews will be cleaning the streets of Downtown Iowa City of sand and other winter-related debris overnight Friday March 22, 2019 beginning at 2 a.m. Vehicles parked in tow-away zones will be removed.

Towing will impact Prentiss Street to Market Street, Madison Street to Gilbert Street, as well as North Clinton Street from Market Street to Church Street. The parking in these areas are metered spots, which do not permit parking from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. Follow all posted parking signs to prevent your vehicle from being towed.

Travel Alert - Evening Lane Reductions on Highway 6 / Riverside Drive

Beginning today, Monday, March 18, 2019, nighttime work will begin on Highway 6 / Riverside Drive, from Benton Street to Rocky Shore Drive, in addition to the daytime work now occurring which requires various lane reductions within this corridor. Traffic control will be minimized during the hours of 6:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. to accommodate increased traffic during these time periods.
