Rummage in the Ramp by the numbers: nearly 300 tons saved from Landfill in 12 years

Since its inception in 2007, Rummage in the Ramp has been a historic success for City sustainability goals by diverting used goods from the Iowa City Landfill.

In its first 12 years, the sale of used couches, furniture, and every day appliances has diverted almost 300 tons of refuse: 291.9 tons exactly. In comparison, a mature African elephant weighs 6.7 tons, which means Rummage in the Ramp has diverted the equivalent of the weight of 45 elephants from the Landfill.

Eastbound Court St. from Muscatine to 1st to close for repairs

Weather permitting, beginning at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, the eastbound lane of Court Street from Muscatine Avenue to 1st Avenue will be closed to through traffic as crews perform pavement repairs.

The repairs will mean a detour bus route will be in place. The repairs are expected to be completed by Monday, July 15, 2019.

Motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists are to take note of this construction and to seek an alternate route or allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas....

Garbage, recycling, and yard waste will be collected on Independence Day, Thursday, July 4, 2019.

The change means City curbside customers, on the holiday and the following Friday, July 5, 2019, will put out refuse at the normal date and time.

In recent years, refuse was not collected on some federal holidays. Staff then collected two days worth of refuse the next day. The City has changed that practice after a dramatic increase in recycling and yard waste usage by curbside customers, which made collecting two days worth of refuse difficult to do in one day.

The Iowa City Landfill sees sharp increases in the amount of trash in July and August due to residents moving in and out as leases changeover. The City of Iowa City encourages residents to recycle as much as possible to reduce waste ending up at the landfill.

Iowa City curbside customers can recycle cardboard, mixed paper, cartons, metal cans, and plastics #1-5 and #7 in their curbside recycling cart (65-gallon cart with blue lid).

Downtown curb work will impact some Iowa Avenue, Linn, and Clinton parking spaces

Beginning Monday, June 3, 2019, broken curb sections will be reconstructed along Linn Street between Iowa Avenue and Burlington Street; and Iowa Avenue between Clinton and Gilbert streets.

The Iowa Arts Festival kicks off Iowa City’s summer festival season, beginning Friday, May 31 and ending Sunday, June 2, 2019, bringing artists and their work, live music, family activities, food vendors and all sorts of fun to Downtown Iowa City for the 26th consecutive year.

Pickup of yard waste by City of Iowa City crews has been delayed due to Memorial Day and high usage of yard waste and organics carts by curbside customers.

The delay means customers whose refuse is picked up on Tuesdays and later can expect their yard waste and organics carts, including the yellow-lid City carts, to be picked a day or more later than normal. Garbage and recycling pickup is still running on time.

The bike races loop around the historic Old Capitol using Washington Street, Madison Street, Jefferson Street, Clinton Street, Iowa Avenue, Dubuque Street and connects again on Washington Street.
