Now that the official start of winter is only weeks away, it's time to seriously start thinking about buttoning up the house for the cold weather season. To help out, the City of Iowa City is offering zero-interest loans of up to $4,000 to income-eligible homeowners for energy-efficient improvements such as new furnaces or upgrades to heating systems, new windows, insulation, and/or weatherproofing. The Iowa River environmental clean-up that had been scheduled by the City of Iowa City this Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016, has been cancelled. Volunteers are still needed for a clean-up on the following Sunday, Oct. 30.

Linn Street to reduce to one lane for work on Washington Street

Linn Street will reduce to one lane of northbound traffic only between Iowa Avenue and College Street beginning Monday, Oct. 24, weather permitting.

The lane reduction is needed as reconstruction work continues on the Washington Streetscape Project, an ongoing effort to replace underground infrastructure and update amenities like lighting, seating and parking on Washington Street.

Linn Street is expected to reopen to full traffic on November 30. Drivers should take note of this work and take an alternative route.

Reception to be held to honor local, influential architect

Come celebrate the mid-century legacy of late, local architect Henry L. Fisk during a public reception.

The celebration will happen Thursday, Nov. 3 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Iowa City Municipal Airport terminal, 1801 S. Riverside Drive, Iowa City. The event is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be served.

The airport terminal, dedicated in 1953, is one of many Iowa City buildings that Fisk designed from the late 1930s until his death in 1962. Fisk was Iowa City’s only registered architect for many of those years.

Veterans ride Iowa City Transit for free on Veterans' Day

To honor veterans for their service, Iowa City Transit will offer free rides for veterans and their families on fixed-route City buses on Veterans' Day, Friday, Nov. 11, 2016. The free rides will be provided during all hours of operation, from 5:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. Johnson County SEATS paratransit service will also offer free rides to veterans that day.

Beginning Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016 the outbound Oakcrest and Night/Weekend Oakcrest will detour due to resurfacing work on Oakcrest Street between Sunset Street and George Street.

This closure is expected to last until approximately Monday, Oct. 24, 2016. These routes will bypass the work zone by detouring via Koser Avenue from Melrose Avenue to George Street and then resume service on Oakcrest Street.

Volunteers needed next two weekends for Iowa Riverbank environmental clean-ups

At least 15 volunteers are needed from noon to 3 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016, for an environmental clean-up along the Iowa River north of McCollister Bridge in Iowa City. Volunteers will remove trash, invasive species, and woody debris to help reduce flooding and erosion and to improve water quality. If enough volunteers are not signed up by Friday evening, the event will have to be cancelled. Another clean-up is scheduled the following Sunday, on Oct. 30.
