Learn how dozens of artists and crafters keep still-viable materials out of the Landfill by using recycled goods to create art, home décor and other projects at the third annual Craft Your Environment Fair this Saturday, April 23. Join Friends of Historic Preservation, Salvage Barn, Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and the City of Iowa City for this reuse-themed craft fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the East Side Recycling Center, 2401 Scott Blvd. SE.

The fair will also host local environmental groups with kids’ activities and information about recycling, composting, climate activism, the Songbird Project and more. Stop in at noon for storytelling by Perry Ross. At 1 p.m., local climate activist Miriam Kashia will talk about her work in the Iowa City community and across the country. She marched across the country last year with the Great March for Climate Action and this spring participated in a similar march from Philadelphia to Washington, DC.

Parking will be limited, so attendees are urged to walk, bike or carpool, if possible.  Overflow parking will be available one lot south at Systems Unlimited on Scott Boulevard.

The Craft Your Environment Fair is just one of several events and activities planned by local groups in Johnson County to celebrate Earth Day and Earth Month, established in 1970 to create awareness of issues facing our increasingly fragile planet. Celebrated each year on April 22, Earth Day has over a billion participants in 192 countries around the world, including individuals, businesses, schools and governments, who commemorate what has been achieved and discuss what remains to be done to protect our planet through activism and environmental events.
