Iowa City receives perfect score in Municipal Equality Index

City receives perfect score for LGBTQ inclusion from Human Rights Campaign

The City of Iowa City has earned a score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign's 10th annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI), the only nationwide rating system of LGBTQ inclusion in municipal law, policy, and services. The City received 12 flex points for additional efforts for a total raw score of 112. This is the eighth consecutive year the City has earned a score of 100 or more.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is the nation's largest LGBTQ civil rights organization. Their MEI examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are of LGBTQ people who live and work there....

The Mercer Park Aquatic Center pool closure previously scheduled from Friday, Oct. 1, 2021 through Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2021 has been extended.

Mercer Park Aquatic Center pool, located at 2701 Bradford Drive, will remain closed through Jan. 17, 2022. Delays are due to supply chain issues with the dehumidification unit and labor shortages in the local construction market.

Beginning Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021, the Iowa City and University of Iowa police departments are teaming up to host a winter clothing drive. The departments are collecting the following items in sizes ranging from newborn to adult:

Part of American Legion Road Improvements Project by Engineering

Weather permitting, starting on Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, American Legion Road from Eastbrook Street to Buckingham Lane will be open to normal traffic.

Also on Monday, American Legion Road will be closed to through traffic between Arlington Drive and Barrington Road. This closure will facilitate utility reconstruction associated with the American Legion Road Improvements Project. A detour route will be posted utilizing Scott Boulevard, Court Street, and Taft Avenue. It is anticipated that this phase of the project will be completed by August 2022.

Please note that trash, yard waste, and recycling will NOT be collected on Thanksgiving Day, but will be collected on Friday. Detailed schedule changes and other office closures are below.

The Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department will soon receive several Koala Kare changing stations, thanks to a donation from Pampers of Procter and Gamble.

The changing tables will be installed in several of the City's public restrooms so that caregivers who stop by these facilities are better equipped to manage baby care on the go.

The 28 changing tables are expected to arrive in the next few months, allowing staff to install them over the winter and spring months.
