Iowa City Police investigate unattended death

On Sunday, May 15, 2022, the Iowa City Police Department received information about a possible deceased individual. Based on the information received, officers were able to locate the body of a deceased man inside a building in the 300 Block of S. Dubuque Street. Because no one witnessed the death, an investigation began immediately.

The deceased man has been identified as Brandon D. Patterson, 27. Based on the preliminary investigation and assistance from the Johnson County Medical Examiner, Patterson's death is not believed to be suspicious.

City Park Pool and the City's three splash pads will open to the public beginning Memorial Day weekend!

City Park Pool

City Park Pool is located outdoors on Park Road in Upper City Park on the northwest side of Iowa City. The pool is expected to open on Memorial Day weekend with three days of fun in the sun. On May 28 - 30, 2022, open swim will run from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Regular pool schedules and pricing rates are available by visiting icgov.org/Pools .

Iowa City Fire Department responds to Thursday morning fire

The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 1227 Burns Ave. at 12:58 a.m., Thursday, May 12, 2022.

Firefighters arrived on scene at 1:02 a.m. and discovered fire coming from a second floor window. The fire was brought under control by 1:13 a.m. The fire was confined to the kitchen area of the residence, but the home sustained smoke damage throughout.

Two occupants of the home were taken to an area hospital for evaluation. One pet died due to smoke inhalation and another survived.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents....

The Iowa City Fire Department - one of the oldest fire services in the state of Iowa - is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.

On May 20, 1872, following a large fire in the Downtown business area, the Iowa City City Council agreed to purchase $500 worth of fire fighting equipment, including buckets and hook and ladder equipment. This equipment was used by a new volunteer company Rescue Hook and Ladder Company #1 and was the genesis of the Iowa City Fire Department.

Iowa City Transit summer schedule will begin Monday, May 16, 2022

Starting Monday, May 16, 2022, Iowa City Transit will begin operating a summer schedule due to the end of the school year for the University of Iowa and the Iowa City Community School District. Schedule changes are listed below:

The Downtown Free Shuttle route will cease operating effective Friday, May 13, 2022. The last departure will be at 6:15 p.m. The AM & PM Eastside Loop routes will cease operating effective Wednesday, June 1, 2022. The last departure will be at 3:05 p.m.

Regular service on the Downtown Free Shuttle service will resume...

The Iowa City Police Department continues to investigate the shots fired incident at Mercer Park that occurred in the evening of Monday, May 9, 2022.

As of Tuesday afternoon, there are no known threats to the area. As a precautionary measure, police presence will increase in the and around the park while the active investigation continues.

The City and ICPD take all such acts of violence in the Iowa City community with the utmost seriousness. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Police at 319-356-5275.

Iowa City Police investigate Sunday shooting

Iowa City Police responded to a report of shots fired in the 600 Block of Highway 6 West around 4:45 p.m., Sunday, May 8, 2022. One person was taken to a local hospital to be treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Officers remain at the scene and the case is still under investigation. Police do not believe there is an active threat to the public.
