At 9:50 am on Thursday, January 28th, the Iowa City Fire Department responded to a reported fire at 819 S. 1st Avenue – Shakespeare’s Pub & Grill. The first units arrived to find smoke showing from multiple roof vents. Fire crews located active fire in the walls and attic space near the kitchen area. Crews contained the fire and brought it under control within 12 minutes of arrival. All occupants had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of the fire department.
16 on-duty Iowa City Fire Department personnel participated in fire suppression efforts. A callback of off-duty personnel was initiated and 15 responding personnel were assigned to reserve apparatus to maintain response capability during the fire. Personnel from the Johnson County Ambulance, Iowa City Police Department, Mid-American Energy, Iowa City Water Department, and Johnson County Emergency Communications Center also provided assistance. Fire crews were on scene for approx. 1.5 hrs. The property, valued at $297,120.00, suffered damage that is estimated at $40,000.00. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
