Iowa City Police Department arrests West High School bomb threat suspect

On Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 8:40 a.m., the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center (JECC) received a 911 call stating that there was an explosive device at Iowa City West High School, located at 2901 Melrose Avenue. The incoming call was not able to be called back by the dispatchers.

The bomb threat resulted in the evacuation of West High School and the bussing of more than 2,000 students to a secondary location so the school could be searched for an explosive or incendiary device. Yard waste pick-up temporarily suspended

The City of Iowa City Solid Waste Division will temporarily suspend yard waste pick-up as part of its curbside garbage collection service. The suspension will begin Monday, Feb. 1 and continue through Friday, March 11, 2016 to conserve fuel and limit expenses during late winter when there is minimal use of the service.

Yard waste service is still available during this period, by appointment. Customers should call 319-356-5151 at least 24 hours prior to their regular garbage collection day to request a pick-up of yard waste.

An upcoming workshop, "Repurposing pallets to home décor," originally scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 27 has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Feb. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The workshop will teach participants how to turn scrap pallets into beautiful, functional items for the home. It will also teach tips and tricks to make pallet projects simpler and quicker.

The City of Iowa City’s annual year-end financial summary, which provides information on actual income, incurred expenses and financial position through the end of fiscal year 2015, is now available on the City’s website at www.icgov.org/budget . Compilation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) is required by the State Code of Iowa.
