Thousands of runners and walkers of all ages will hit the streets of Iowa City this Sunday, Oct. 18 for the 17th annual Run for the Schools, a fundraiser that benefits the Iowa City Community School District Foundation and Regina Catholic Education Center. Several different run / walk distances -- 5K, 10K, and half-marathon, as well as Fun Runs -- are scheduled, with courses twisting their way through Iowa City streets. The Fun Run races get underway at 8 a.m., with other races set to start at 9 a.m.

Sections of the following streets will be closed for at least three hours to accommodate race participants: Gilbert Street, Highland Avenue, Keokuk Street, Kirkwood Avenue, Dodge Street, Walnut Street, Summit Street, College Street, 7th Avenue, Friendship Street, Amhurst Street, Lower West Branch Road, Hummingbird Lane, Scott Park Drive, Court Street Trail, and Arlington Drive. Drivers are advised to watch closely for street barricades, signage, and participants to ensure safety during the event.
