The City of Iowa City Streets Division will begin street-sweeping operations in two weeks to remove sand and debris from the streets to enhance public safety. This work is scheduled to coincide with the University’s Spring Break schedule. During this time, on-street parking will be prohibited in certain areas so that street-sweepers can access the full width of the street. Vehicles that are not moved will be towed.

“No parking due to maintenance” signs will be posted at least 48 hours in advance of any work to alert vehicle owners to move their cars. If you are a University student who normally parks in one of these areas, be aware and plan accordingly so that your vehicle is not towed.

On Monday, March 14, crews will begin sweeping the Downtown area. Weather permitting, that work is expected to be completed by Thursday, March 17. Crews will then focus on main arterial streets and bike lanes within the City, after which they’ll move into the City’s residential areas. Drivers are urged to be patient, as the sweepers are slow-moving and need to stop periodically to empty debris. It usually takes about seven weeks to complete a full pass through the City.

The following street-sweeping schedule has been provided for Tuesday, March 15 and  Wednesday, March 16. These streets will be posted with announcements of the impending work on Wednesday, March 9. People who park along these routes should make sure to move their vehicles prior to the start of clean-up.
