Applications are now available for the City of Iowa City’s Aid to Agencies funding, which provides support for Iowa City nonprofits, organizations, and agencies to help cover the operational costs of their organizations. Fundraising by nonprofits often doesn’t provide for rent, utilities, and other operational costs, so this program helps agencies cover those gaps.

The minimum award is $15,000. Agencies whose projects address a high priority need in the Iowa City community will be considered first for funding. Priorities are outlined at...

Iowa City Police officers arrested a 29-year-old man following an incident of shots fired.

On Monday, July 18, 2016 officers responded to the area of 1100 Arthur Street at 12:49 a.m. for multiple reports of shots fired. Officers found shell casings and spoke to several witnesses who provided descriptions of the suspect and vehicle involved.

With this information, officers quickly located the suspect vehicle at 1264 Esther Court. Officers found D’Anthony Devon Money outside attempting to escape....

FACF presents final payment on $1 million capital campaign pledge for new Animal Center

Friends of the Animal Center Foundation (FACF) has paid off the $1 million pledge it made in 2012 to help fund construction of the new Iowa City Animal Care & Adoption Center at 3910 Napoleon Lane. The group presented the final $400,000 check to Mayor Jim Throgmorton on Thursday, July 14, 2016 in a small ceremony held at the Animal Center.

The flood of 2008 destroyed the previous Animal Center on Kirkwood Avenue. For seven years, the Animal Center operated from a temporary facility on Sand Road while plans were made and funding sources were established for a new building. FACF...

Drivers should be aware of how they can access Upper and Lower City Park as crews have closed Park Road between Riverside Drive and the Upper City Park exit for work on the Iowa City Gateway Project .

People can access Upper City Park and the City Park Pool from Riverside Drive (from the south) and Park Road (from the west). Know that Upper City Park Drive is a one-way road and experiences a high volume of pedestrians and cyclists, many of whom are children. Road Closure: W Benton Street

West Benton Street will close to traffic between Spencer Drive and Keswick Drive, beginning at 6 a.m. on Friday, July 15, 2016 , weather permitting, for pavement repairs.

Driver Detour

A detour for drivers will be posted that uses Mormon Trek Blvd., Melrose Ave., and Sunset St., to divert traffic around the closure. Access to area neighborhoods will be allowed, but no through traffic.

Drivers should be aware of this construction and follow the detour or take an alternate route. As always, use caution when traveling through all construction areas...

Call for Volunteers: help move Rose Oaks tenants

Community volunteers are needed to help roughly 20 families move out of a low-income apartment complex in Iowa City that is closing for renovations.

The City of Iowa City provided funding to help Shelter House open an onsite resource center at Rose Oaks inside unit 1801, formerly a one-bedroom apartment. At the center, people have been able to fill out applications seeking aid for moving costs, utility and security deposits, rent and other assistance needed to secure permanent housing.

The closure of Park Road between Riverside Drive and the Upper City Park exit has been moved to Thursday, July 14, 2016 instead of Wednesday, July 13, 2016 .

The closure is necessary for work as part of the Iowa City Gateway Project , a flood mitigation effort that will elevate Dubuque Street while also raising and replacing the Park Road Bridge.

It’s time for a “Dux-over” (pronounced “do-over” ) -- as in “Rummage ReDux,” where furniture, clothing, home décor and other items that have been recycled, reused, reinvented, or repurposed into “wow” will be showcased at the 2016 Rummage in the Ramp. Artists, crafters, upcyclers and other related Rummage ReDuxers are now being encouraged to submit proposals to display examples of their work and show others how a little creativity can convert old items into something more useful or visually appealing.
