Schools in Iowa City are kicking off the 2016-17 academic session. Willowwind School begins its new year on Monday, August 22, while classes in the Iowa City Community School District and Regina Catholic Education Center get underway on Wednesday, August 24. Students at Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa also resume classes on Monday.

Police seek help in suspicious vehicle investigation

Iowa City Police are asking the public for help as they investigate a report of a suspicious vehicle near Wetherby Park.

Police responded to the park on Sat. Aug. 20, 2016 at about 8: 20 p.m. A group of juveniles reported being in Wetherby Park when a vehicle, described as a white truck occupied by a single Hispanic male stopped and told the juveniles to get in. The group fled the park unharmed.

Officers were unable to locate the suspected vehicle in the area.

This incident remains under investigation and the Iowa City Police Department is requesting the assistance...

The Iowa City Human Rights Commission is partnering with local diversity-building and human rights organizations on an event called “Building and Crossing Bridges Together” to establish a foundation of solidarity among residents who live in the Corridor. School travel reminders with upcoming First Avenue closure

The First Avenue closure will impact travel for parents and students going to and from South East Junior High School, City High School and Tate High School.

First Avenue will close south of Bradford Drive through Mall Drive beginning Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016 for continued work on the First Avenue Grade Separation, a project that will elevate the railroad crossing and lower the road, helping to reduce long train delays.

The road is expected to reopen in early September.

It won’t be raining cats and dogs this weekend at the Johnson County Fairgrounds, but rather, “Reigning Cats and Dogs,” a musical roast to benefit the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center, Friends of the Animal Center Foundation, and the Johnson County Humane Society.

Crews will shut-down the 100 Block of North Linn Street today, Thursday August 18, 2016 for the first annual Farm to Street Dinner.

The event will bring together roughly 200 people who will join around a table, outside on Linn Street and share a delicious six-course meal prepared by several downtown Iowa City chefs with locally produced ingredients. Money raised will support local food efforts including the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Foundation and the Iowa City Community School District Farm to School program.

The Iowa City Public Library’s online catalog and digital collections will be unavailable Wednesday, Aug. 17. This includes eBooks and digital audiobooks through OverDrive, digital magazines through Zinio, and research databases.
