As part of its 35th anniversary celebration and in honor of Older Americans Month, the Iowa City - Johnson County Senior Center will showcase the artistic talents of its members at a three-week art show. On Friday, May 6, the community is invited to the opening reception of the show, scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. at The Center, 28 S. Linn Street. Entertainment and refreshments will be provided.

At least 26 artists will display their work on the first and second floors of The Center. A variety of mediums will be exhibited, including watercolors, acrylics, and mixed media. Some of the works will be offered for sale, from $25 to $1,200, depending on the artist. All exhibitors are currently enrolled in one of several art classes offered at The Center.

The works will continue to be displayed on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, May 27.

Research has shown that art programs for older adults improve health, prevent disease, and encourage community involvement. Senior Center programming includes a variety of artistic and creative learning opportunities to support members’ efforts to stay active, curious, and connected.
