The City of Iowa City's proposed budget for fiscal year 2017 and the proposed Capital Improvement Program plan for 2016-2020 are now available online at http://www.icgov.org/budget . Printed copies are also available for viewing at the Iowa City Public Library at 123 S. Linn Street and the City Clerk's Office in City Hall at 410 E. Washington Street. Holiday string lights don't work? Recycle them!

As you're putting up or taking down your holiday decorations this year, remember that strings of holiday lights that no longer work don’t have to be thrown away -- they can be recycled! Holiday lights that you want to dispose of may be dropped off in special collection bins that have been set up throughout Iowa City and Coralville.

The string light recycling program will run through Monday, Jan. 4. Lights are the only item that should be deposited in the special collection bins -- no packaging or other holiday decorations. Lights should not be placed in curbside recycling bins....

Robbery - McDonalds Lower Muscatine Road

On December 21, 2015 at 4:24 AM members of the Iowa City Police Department responded to the McDonalds located at 1861 Lower Muscatine Road for a report of a robbery. An employee was approached by a subject as they prepared to open the business. The subject forced the employee to give him money from the business, the subject then fled the scene on foot. The subject is described as a black male, approximately 6’, 20-30 years old wearing a brown jacket and black stocking cap. It is unknown if the subject was armed. The employee was not injured during the incident.

Road Construction - Melrose Avenue

Weather permitting, beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, December 21, 2015, Melrose Avenue will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic just west of the Highway 218 interchange. Work will be occurring daily at this location from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. through Wednesday, December 23rd and also on Monday, December 28th. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate the installation of a water service line to the Johnson County Poor Farm.

Motorists are to take note of this lane reduction and to allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised...

Iowa River Trail closed at Highway 6 due to isolated flooding

The Iowa River Trail at Highway 6 is closed until further notice due to rising Iowa River levels. The Iowa River Trail connects North Liberty to Iowa City. Within Iowa City, the trail connects the Terry Trueblood Recreation Area to Terrill Mill Park, and City Park to Crandic Park.

Recent unseasonably warm weather and heavy rains have caused the Iowa River to flood and the Coralville Reservoir pool to rise above normal levels. The United States Army Corps of Engineers reports that outflows from the reservoir are currently at 8,000 cfs (cubic feet per second) and will reach 10,000...

Closures scheduled at Robert A. Lee Recreation Center and pool

Upcoming closures are scheduled at the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center and pool for repair and maintenance projects.

The pool will be closed from Dec. 24 through Jan. 17 to replace the heat recovery coils in the pool area and paint the wading pool. The entire Robert A. Lee facility at 220 S. Gilbert Street will be closed Jan. 4-11 while the boiler is replaced.

The Mercer / Scanlon facility and pool, located at 2701 Bradford Drive, will be open for use during this time, except for holiday closures scheduled Dec. 24-25 and Jan. 1.

Weather permitting, from 8:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 21st, and on Tuesday December 22nd, S Summit Street will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic between Washington Street and College Street. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate tree trimming in the area for utility lines.

Motorists are to take note of this lane reduction and to allow extra travel time as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.
