Road Construction - Clinton Street

Weather permitting, from 6 a.m. until noon on Friday, Jan. 8, Clinton Street will be closed to traffic from Burlington Street to Court Street. This closure is necessary to facilitate the construction of a building in the area.

Motorists are to take note of this road closure and to seek an alternate route during this time period. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.

Iowa City Police Department warns of recent circulation of counterfeit money

The Iowa City Police Department (ICPD) is alerting area residents and retailers of counterfeit U.S. currency. There have been numerous recent incidences of counterfeit $100 bills being circulated through the community.

On Friday, Jan. 1, the ICPD took a single report of a counterfeit $100 bill being passed at a local business. Since then, the ICPD has taken two additional reports of counterfeit $100 bills passed at other area businesses.

The serial numbers on the counterfeited $100 bills reported to the Iowa City Police Department are:

Recreation Center hours change

In order to provide a higher level of customer service to patrons throughout the evening and weekend hours, as well as bring the hours of operation for the City's two recreation facilities into alignment and eliminate confusion for the public, the Iowa City Recreation Division is amending hours of operation at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center and Mercer Park Aquatic Center / Scanlon Gym. The following schedules will be implemented Jan. 2, 2016:

Residents: Still time to apply for a spot in Citizens Police Academy

There’s still time to apply for the annual Citizens Police Academy to learn more about law enforcement and police work, explore law enforcement as a career, and enhance communication between local officers and residents. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, Jan. 22.

The academy is organized by a coalition of local law enforcement agencies, including the Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, and University of Iowa Police Departments, and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. It’s time once again for local writers to submit poems to the 14th annual Poetry in Public Program for consideration. Writers of all ages and all levels of writing ability and experience are encouraged to submit entries to the competition, which is sponsored by the City of Iowa City Public Art Program. Poetry in Public was initiated in 2002 to celebrate, promote and nurture the rich writing culture that exists in Iowa City.

A panel of judges will review all entries and then select poems that will be displayed throughout the Iowa City community and on local and literary websites....

ICPL Announces Second Sunday Garden Forum Lineup

For nearly 25 years, the Iowa City Public Library and Project GREEN have partnered to host the Second Sunday Garden Forum series. This winter’s forums will be held on Jan. 10, Feb. 14, and March 13.

Chuck Porto, retail manager at Iowa City Landscaping & Garden Center and host of KXIC's Saturday Lawn & Garden Show, will kick off the 2016 series on Jan. 10 with “Something Old, Something New – Trees, Shrubs and Evergreens.” Porto will re-introduce attendees to traditional standards and share information about new plants gaining popularity on the market.

Get a jump start on your 2016 reading goal by participating in Read to the Rhythm, the Iowa City Public Library’s Winter Reading Program.

Pick up a Read to the Rhythm bingo card at any of our public service desks beginning Monday, Jan. 4. There are four cards available, one for each age level of the program: babies, children, teens and adults.
