The First Avenue closure will impact travel for parents and students going to and from South East Junior High School, City High School and Tate High School.
First Avenue will close south of Bradford Drive through Mall Drive beginning Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016 for continued work on the First Avenue Grade Separation, a project that will elevate the railroad crossing and lower the road, helping to reduce long train delays.
The road is expected to reopen in early September.
Students and parents should consider the following tips when traveling to and from the schools:
- If your student is eligible use the school bus
- South East Junior High parents should avoid Bradford Drive for drop-offs and pick-ups and should instead use the Mercer Park Aquatic Center.
- Pedestrians needing to cross the railroad during the closure should use the Longfellow tunnel located at the corner of Lower Muscatine Road and Kirkwood Avenue.
- Students can use the Eastside Loop transit route. The bus will continue the detour it made for First Avenue construction in 2015. Maps and schedules are available at icgov.org/busSchedules. Please note the Bongo Map is currently not showing the most accurate East Side Loop route.
Parents and students should contact their school directly with questions about finding a safe route to travel to and from school. School contact information can be found at www.iowacityschools.org.
