After its 10th year, Rummage in the Ramp continues to prove its popularity in Iowa City, diverting roughly 27 tons of household goods from the Landfill during the 12-day event. Launched as an effort to reduce the volume of still-usable goods taken to the Landfill following the traditional college student move-out cycle, this recycle-and-reuse event also raised $19,000 for local nonprofits this year. Sale proceeds were split by the local agencies and student organizations that helped staff the event.

As always, donations offered an eclectic mix of items, including 125 couches, 65 tables, 75 mattresses and box springs, over 600 bags and boxes of clothing and household goods, over 100 boxes of books, kids’ toys, holiday decorations and other items which were then sold to the general public. This year’s donation highlights included a piano, an organ, and enough gently used workout equipment to start several home gyms. Almost four tons of items that remained at the end of the sale were recycled or donated to other agencies.

Over 200 volunteers from 38 local nonprofit organizations helped staff this year's sale and will split the profits so that each group will receive $460. Agencies involved include Access to Independence, Association of Latinos Moving Ahead, Antelope Lending Library, Association for India's Development (AID Iowa), Backyard Abundance, Bluestockings, Compeer, Continental Crossings, Crisis Center, Four Oaks, Free Lunch Program, Free Clinic, Friends of Historic Preservation--Salvage Barn, Gospel Explosion Ministry, Iowa Agni, Iowa City Zen Center, Iowa Humane Alliance, Iowa Shares, Iowa United Nations Association, Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity, Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Iowa Youth Writing Project, Johnson County Soil & Water Conservation District, Lambda Theta Nu, Last Hope Animal Rescue, Local Foods Connection, North Liberty Community Pantry, Riverside Theatre, Successful Living, SIIHR (Students of Hydroscience & Engineering), UI Environmental Coalition, UI Saucy Nancy Ultimate Frisbee, UI Urban & Regional Planning Student Association, UI Women in Science and Engineering, Unitarian-Universalist Society of Iowa City, United Action for Youth, and Zeta Phi Beta Young Life.

Sponsors of this year’s event included Aero Rental and Party Shoppe, New Pioneer Co-op, and Hy-Vee stores of Iowa City. Additionally, the City recognizes a previous donation by Graphic Printing and Design of imprinted aprons which are utilized each year.

Over ten years, an estimated 247 tons of furniture, clothes, books, household items and miscellaneous items have been diverted from the Landfill through Rummage in the Ramp. Almost 6,000 people have donated items, some 22,000 people have purchased items, and over 1,650 volunteers have worked to help load, offload, organize, and staff the sale. In total, over $155,000 has been raised to help support local non-profits for the benefit of the Iowa City community.
