Public invited to screenings of “Inhabit” film

Community members who are concerned about the quality and source of their food as well as declining bee and monarch butterfly populations are invited to screenings of the award-winning film, “Inhabit.” The film documents real-world examples of communities that grow food, provide habitat for desired wildlife, harvest rainwater, and prepare for a changing climate.

Screenings are scheduled Sunday, Jan. 17 at 1:30 p.m. at Prairiewoods, 120 E. Boyson Road in Hiawatha, and on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 1:30 p.m. at Shambaugh Auditorium at the University of Iowa Main Library, 125 W. Washington...

Jan. 17-23 has been designated as Hazardous Materials Awareness Week 2016 in the state of Iowa and elsewhere across the country.

Hazardous materials are regularly used in our homes and workplaces. According to the Iowa City Fire Department, knowing how to handle and store hazardous products can greatly reduce the risk of accidents, injury and exposure. In addition, proper disposal of these chemicals and fuels not only protects personal safety, but also the health and safety of the environment, according to Iowa City Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jordan.

ICPL presents free Jim Gill concert at The Englert

The Iowa City Public Library is excited to announce that award-winning musician and author Jim Gill will perform from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at The Englert Theater in downtown Iowa City. Parents and children of all ages are invited to attend this free concert as part of the Library’s Music is the Word celebration.

Dubuque Street lane reduction

Weather permitting, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 12 and Wednesday, Jan 13, Dubuque Street will be reduced to one lane of northbound traffic from Park Road to Kimball Road. This lane reduction is necessary to facilitate tree clearing in the area by MidAmerican Energy. Traffic control will be in place.

Motorists are to take note of this lane reduction and allow extra travel time, as delays may occur. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.

Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center reopening delayed

The Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center and pool have been closed for repairs and maintenance, including replacement of the building’s boiler. The facility was expected to reopen Tuesday, Jan. 12, but a delay in the completion of the boiler project will extend closure of the facility until the weekend. Both the recreation center and the pool, which has also been closed for maintenance, are expected to reopen on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Patrons are encouraged to use the Mercer / Scanlon recreation facility at 2701 Bradford Drive this week.
