Diversification of tree species encouraged in wake of emerald ash borer infestation

The discovery of an emerald ash borer (EAB) in an ash tree on the University of Iowa campus means that Iowa City is now categorized as an EAB infestation area, according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. There are now 30 counties in Iowa, including Johnson County, that have been confirmed as EAB infestation areas.

Zac Hall, Iowa City Superintendent of Parks and Forestry, said it can take eight to 12 years for the insect to decimate the local ash tree population, so it is not necessary for property owners to immediately remove ash trees that are not showing...

In a ceremony held Feb. 5 at City Hall, Iowa City Fire Chief John Grier presented the Lifesaver Award to six members of the Iowa City Fire Department for exceptional lifesaving measures. They were Firefighter Thomas Hartshorn, Firefighter Ryan Haxmeier, Firefighter Merv Miller, Firefighter Glenn Pauley, Lieutenant Timothy Recker, and Firefighter Andrew Wulfekuhle.

Iowa City Police Respond to Armed Robbery

On February 6, 2016 at approximately 5:11pm, the Iowa City Police Department responded to the Acapulco Mexican Bakery at 1937 Keokuk St for a report of an Armed Robbery. According to the victims, a Hispanic or black male entered the business brandishing a handgun and demanding money. The suspect fled the business southbound with an undisclosed amount of money. No one was injured in this robbery.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic or black male, approximately 5’8” and heavyset wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, white shoes and a white face covering.

Many individuals come to the Iowa City Public Library around tax time to pick up the forms they need to complete their Federal Income Tax return. However, due to cuts within the Federal government, the Library will no longer be able to offer the wide variety of forms it has in the past free of charge.

City Hall Revenue Office to be closed for construction

The Revenue Office at City Hall, where residents set up City utility accounts and pay water bills and other City fees, will be closed for the next three to four weeks for a remodeling project that will improve the customer service area, making it ADA-accessible.
