The Iowa City Human Rights Commission is seeking applicants to fill an unexpired term, plus a three-year term upon appointment, with the term ending December 31, 2023. Service is on a volunteer basis and the group meets monthly.

Duties of the Commission involve educating the public on civil and human rights, including planning programs and activities to eliminate unlawful discrimination. The Commission also makes recommendations to the City Council for Social Justice and Racial Equity Grant funding, as well as for additional local legislation as it relates to discrimination....

Tow warning signs will be posted on four City streets so crews residents can remove their cars to facilitate cleanup of storm debris on Friday, Aug. 21, 2020, and Monday, Aug. 24, 2020.

The four streets scheduled for storm debris cleanup with temporarily prohibited parking are:

Van Buren Street and Johnson Street , both from Burlington to Bowery streets, on Friday, Aug. 21, 2020 Lucas Street and Governor Street , both from Burlington to Bowery streets, on Monday, Aug. 24, 2020

The following roads will be closed to thru traffic while City crews remove tree debris:

During the afternoon of Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2020, Prairie du Chien Road from Dodge Street to Foster Road will be closed to thru traffic. On Thursday, Aug. 20, 2020, Friendship Street from First Avenue to Court Street will be closed to thru traffic.

These closures will speed up the clearing process, and help keep crews safe.

Work on Prairie Du Chien should conclude Wednesday, while work on Friendship Street could finish by end of day Thursday.

City announces social distanced meet and greet for Police Chief candidates

A socially distanced meet and greet for the three Police Chief finalists has been set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 24, 2020, on the lawn of Mercer Park between the gym and the playground.

Face coverings and social distancing will be required to participate in this event due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the City's face covering ordinance. The City will provide masks at no charge to participants who do not have one.

The Department of Human Services is offering help to households currently receiving food assistance who need to replace food that was destroyed as a result of the storm on Monday, Aug. 10, 2020. There is limited time in which to apply for this aid; 10 days from the date food spoiled.

To assist our community, we are sending the Bookmobile out for the next few days to provide access to the internet and technical tools to fill out the "Request for Replacement of Spoiled Food" form required to begin the reimbursement process.

The devastating storm that hit the Iowa City area on Monday left hundreds of downed trees, limbs, and wood debris in its wake. City crews, along with the help of the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Johnson County Secondary Roads Department, are working throughout our community to clear streets and remove debris from the City right-of-way. Due to the amount of damage, it may be some time before crews make it to your neighborhood.

The City is offering paper yard waste bags at multiple locations around the community at no cost to assist with post-storm cleanup.
