The world changed on May 25, 2020, when George Floyd was murdered on the streets of Minneapolis by police officers. George Floyd and his family deserve justice. More importantly, George Floyd and his family, along with the entire Black community across this globe deserve tangible change from their government. City receives $3 million grant for new electric buses

The City of Iowa City Transportation Department has received a $3,017,280 grant from the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) in order to acquire new electric buses.

The grant, which was announced on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, means that the City will be able to replace some diesel buses that are currently in use throughout the community.

The grant Iowa City received is just one of the 41 projects that received a total of $130 million from the USDOT's Low- or No- Emission Grant program, which funds the deployment of transit buses and infrastructure for the purchase or lease...

City set to launch new land management and permitting software June 23

The City of Iowa City is taking the next steps to improve customer service, transparency and innovation in land management, licensing and permitting.

On June 23, 2020, the City will launch a new software platform called EnerGov, replacing the existing system that had been in place for nearly 30 years. The new platform will improve efficiency by increasing the types of permits that people can apply for online. Staff will also be transitioning applications, fee payments, requests for inspections, plan reviews, and provide detailed permit status updates online.

On Monday, June 8th, 2020, at approximately 11:27p.m., Iowa City Police officers responded to reports of possible gunshots being heard near 2516 Clearwater Ct. There was no indication that any people were injured during this incident and no reports of injuries have been made.

No arrests have been made and this incident is under investigation.

Iowa City Police are asking for the public's help to identify anyone involved with this incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact Sergeant Jerry Blomgren at 319-356-5276.

Iowa City Transit returns to regular summer service schedule; resumes fare collection June 15

Effective Monday, June 15, 2020, Iowa City Transit will return to the normal weekday summer service schedule.

Hours of operation will be 6 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. Monday- Friday, and 6 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Saturdays. The Downtown Shuttle and Eastside Loop, which typically do not run during the summer, will not resume until the University of Iowa and the Iowa City Community School District are in session. Fare collection will also resume and riders will be asked to board through the front of the bus.
