Weather permitting, on Thursday, Nov. 5, Washington Street will be closed to through traffic from Gilbert Street to Linn Street. This closure will facilitate the removal of scaffolding equipment associated with construction work in the area. It is anticipated that normal traffic will resume by the end of the day.

Motorists are to take note of this construction and to seek an alternate route during this time period.  As always, caution should be exercised when traveling through all construction areas.

Due to the closure of Washington Street, Iowa City Transit will detour several eastbound routes. The detours will begin at 6 a.m. until Washington Street is reopened to normal traffic.

Affected bus routes are:

  • Outbound Downtown South Shuttle
  • Outbound Court Hill
  • Outbound Towncrest
  • Outbound 7th Avenue

These routes will detour using Clinton Street to Burlington Street instead of traveling eastbound on Washington Street. The inbound trips of these bus routes will not be affected. The bus stops located at Washington Street and Linn Street (#7200) and at Washington Street and Gilbert Street (#7201) will not be serviced during the road closure. Customers who normally use these bus stops should catch their bus at the main transit interchange located at the intersection of Clinton Street and Washington Street.
