The community is invited to attend two visioning workshops on May 10 and 11, 2017 that will shape the future of two very different areas in Iowa City, the Northside Neighborhood and South District.

The workshops are the second set of discussions related to the Northside Neighborhood and the South District. City staff are working with Opticos Design, a consulting firm that specializes in planning and designing walkable, sustainable neighborhoods. Input from these workshops will be used to develop zoning tools to achieve the neighborhood vision.

Northside Neighborhood Visioning Workshop
Northside Visioning Workshop

Help shape the future of the Northside Neighborhood by discussing priorities for preservation and possibilities for change during the Northside visioning workshop on Wednesday, May 10 from 6-8 p.m. at Horace Mann Elementary School, 521 N. Dodge Street. The Northside Neighborhood is an older, established neighborhood located north of downtown between Clinton and Governor Streets.

This workshop will include a presentation by Opticos, the consultant team working on an analysis of the Northside Neighborhood. They will present their preliminary analysis of Northside character. Attendees will also participate in a table exercise to identify future residential development opportunities on vacant or underutilized properties. This workshop is a follow-up to the February 2017 Northside Neighborhood workshop.

South District Workshop
South District Visioning Workshop

Help build on the work accomplished in the South District Plan during the South District visioning workshop on Thursday, May 11 from 6-8 p.m. at the Alexander Elementary School Media Center, located at 3571 Sycamore Street. Discussion will focus on future development in the areas that surround Alexander Elementary School. The South District includes neighborhoods located south of Highway 6 and east of the Iowa River.

This workshop will include a presentation by the Opticos consultant team, who is working on new neighborhood opportunities in the South District. Participants will also help conceptually design a new neighborhood using a street map and game pieces representing different building types. This workshop is a follow-up to the February 2017 South District Workshop.
