Registration is now underway for the seventh annual Great Iowa River Canoe and Kayak Race from Iowa City to Hills, scheduled June 11. The event, which provides a recreational opportunity to help build interest in protecting and improving the river, offers race and recreational paddle divisions for canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, and youth. Company challenges are also being accepted.

Early bird registration is $30 per person through May 27, which includes an event t-shirt. Rentals of canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards are also available. After May 27, the fee is higher and t-shirts may not be available. Registration closes on June 3. To sign up, visit

The 9.25-mile race begins at Sturgis Ferry Park on South Riverside Drive in Iowa City. Check-in at Fin and Feather, 125 Highway 1 in Gateway Plaza shopping center, from 8 to 9:15 a.m. The race gets underway at 10 a.m. All participants must wear a life jacket or personal flotation device.

The race ends at Hills Access east of Hills at 4210 520th Street SE, where an awards ceremony and lunch for registered participants will conclude the event. A free shuttle will provide transportation back to participants’ vehicles at Sturgis Ferry Park.

The event is sponsored by Johnson County Conservation, City of Iowa City, Fin & Feather, and Iowa Valley Resource Conservation & Development. Proceeds will be used to purchase kayaks for public programs.
