The City's trick-or-treat event takes place from 5:30 - 8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 31. Before you go out, check out these safety tips from the Iowa City Police and Fire Departments:

Costumes should be safe for walking. Avoid long, billowing fabrics. Wear sturdy shoes. Be visible. Carry a flashlight or wear something lighted. Children should be accompanied by an adult or responsible teen. Do not enter homes. Stay away from candles and open flames. Use a battery operated candle for jack-o-lanterns. Do not eat treats until they are brought home and examined by an adult. Drivers should be alert...

City of Iowa City administrative offices and other facilities will be closed Friday, Nov. 11, 2022, in observance of Veterans Day.

Please note that trash, yard waste, and recycling will be collected on Veterans Day. See details below.

To honor those who have served, Transit is offering complimentary rides to veterans and their families on the holiday. Riders are asked to show a military ID or other identification that indicates veteran status.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022, the Iowa City Public Library (ICPL) hosted a Drag Storytime and Costume Ball. Drag Storytime is a voluntary program that provides educational opportunities and fun, enriching experiences to families with children of all ages. The City of Iowa City Human Rights Commission believes this programming strongly aligns with ICPL’s values of access, belonging, collaboration, and community. Though many drag storytime events have been hosted by ICPL since 2018, the Oct. 15 storytime was the first to be attended by a group of protesters.

Iowa City Senior Center to close early Oct. 28 due to Homecoming Parade

The Iowa City Senior Center (ICSC) will close at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, due to the University of Iowa Homecoming Parade.

Various streets in Downtown Iowa City will start to close at 4 p.m., and the Tower Place Parking Ramp, connected to the ICSC, will close at 5 p.m. The early closure of the ICSC ensures visitors will be able to leave the area ahead of the parade.

Iowa City Police respond to convenience store robberies

Iowa City Police have responded to two convenience store robberies recently.

At 8:27 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21, an armed subject entered BP, 2221 Rochester Ave., and robbed the business at gunpoint. At 8:36 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24, Kirkwood Liquor & Tobacco, 300 Kirkwood Ave., was robbed at gunpoint.

Iowa City Police are actively investigating both robberies. Convenience store employees and community members are asked to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Anyone who sees something suspicious should call 911 or the routine police business number, 319-356-5275....

Transit interchange will temporarily move to Court Street; Downtown Shuttle ends early on Oct. 28 for Homecoming Parade

Iowa City Transit will move the transit interchange to the Court Street Transportation Center between Clinton and Dubuque streets at the beginning of the service day Friday, Oct. 28, 2022.

The 4 - Downtown Shuttle will also end service early that day with the last trip leaving at 2:45 p.m. from Court Street.

Normal services will resume Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022. These changes accommodate the University of Iowa homecoming parade, which runs Friday evening in downtown Iowa City.

One of the great fall traditions in Iowa City - the annual University of Iowa Homecoming Parade - will be back in Downtown Iowa City on Friday, Oct. 28, 2022.

The parade will begin at 5:45 p.m., so be aware of related street closures, parking restrictions, and changes to the City's transit routes earlier in the day.

On Saturday, October 29, 2022, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Johnson County residents can properly dispose of unwanted or outdated pharmaceuticals and needles. The event will be held in the parking lot of the East Side Recycling Center at 2401 Scott Blvd. SE.

Organizations interested in applying for the City's Racial Equity and Social Justice Grant for 2023 can attend one of two informational sessions. Both sessions are being held virtually via Zoom.
