Register today for winter recreation programs

Classes and programs for all ages through the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department start soon. Registration is open and spots are filling quickly. Take a look at some of the programs the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department is offering this season. 

Preschool (Ages 1-5)
Silly Slimy Science: Get ready to slip, splash, and splat as you create fun experiments! Learn the silly part of science in this messy class. Class meets Mondays from 10 to 10:45 a.m. beginning Jan. 21, 2019.
Get Moving with Games and Action Songs: One and a two, and a one two three four! It might be too cold to go outside, but in this class we can still shake, rattle and roll with fun games and songs. Class meets Fridays from 11 to 11:45 a.m. beginning Jan. 25. 
Nature Awareness Class-Itsy Bitsy Spider: The Itsy Bitsy Spider went up the water spout, but where did it go afterwards? In this class, participants will learn more about these crawly creatures with games, art, and activities. Class meets Wednesdays from 1 to 1:45 p.m. beginning Jan. 23. 

Youth (Ages 5-15)
Girls Basketball: Learn and experience the game of basketball. 1st and 2nd grade meets Thursdays at 5:45 p.m. beginning Jan. 24. 3rd and 4th grade meets Tuesdays at 5:45 beginning Jan. 22. 5th and 6th grade girls meet Tuesdays at 6:45 p.m. beginning Jan. 22. 
Learn Dungeons and Dragons: Hail and well met, adventurer! Participants will enjoy creating characters that go on amazing adventures and save the world! Class meets Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. beginning Jan. 29.
Learn Tabletop Games: Have fun and spend time with friends learning tabletop games! Class meets Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. beginning Jan. 29. 
Slimy Art and Science Experiments: Check out this fun, exciting, and slimy class! Participants will use unusual materials to combine science experiments and art. Class meets Mondays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. beginning Jan. 28, 2019 and Thursdays from 2:30 to 4 p.m. beginning Jan. 31. 
Wheel and Handbuilding (Clay Arts): Participants will throw on the wheel, experiment with tools, and decorate their objects. Class for ages 10 to 12 meets Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 18. Class for ages 13 to 15 meets Sundays from 6-8 p.m. beginning Jan. 20.

Adult Activities
Basketball: Get the team together and hit the court for our Adult Basketball Open League. Games are played Sundays from 5 to 8 p.m. beginning Jan. 20. More information available at
Volleyball: Co-recreational and Women's leagues available. Co-recreational games take place Sundays starting at 1 p.m., and women's games take place Tuesdays starting at 6:15 p.m. More information available at

Parent Tot Swim Lessons: An introductory course covering safety topics and skills through games and songs. Class focuses on holding & support techniques, water adjustment, breath control, and buoyancy. Note: both participants spend all class in water and must wear appropriate swim attire.
