An upcoming workshop, "Repurposing pallets to home décor," originally scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 27 has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Feb. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The workshop will teach participants how to turn scrap pallets into beautiful, functional items for the home. It will also teach tips and tricks to make pallet projects simpler and quicker.

The workshop is a part of a winter workshop series designed to show participants how to reuse and upcycle. There is no fee to participate in any of the sessions, which will be held at the East Side Recycling Center’s...

Year-end CAFR financial summary now available on City of Iowa City website

The City of Iowa City’s annual year-end financial summary, which provides information on actual income, incurred expenses and financial position through the end of fiscal year 2015, is now available on the City’s website at www.icgov.org/budget . Compilation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) is required by the State Code of Iowa.

The 171-page wrap-up report will be reviewed by the City Council and submitted to the City’s bond holders. It will also be forwarded to auditors for annual review, and to the Government Finance...

Iowa City Police Department investigates bank robbery at east side US Bank

On Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 9:04 a.m., the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center (JECC) received a 911 call reporting a bank robbery in progress at the US Bank located at 1117 William Street in Iowa City. The witness observing the incident reported seeing a male subject with a gun in the act of committing a robbery at the bank. The witness further reported that the subject, wearing all black with a bag in his hand, was leaving the area of the bank. Awful Purdies to perform at ICPL Jan. 30

The Iowa City Public Library will host the Awful Purdies for a Special Family Concert from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, in Meeting Room A as part of its ongoing Music is the Word celebration.

The Awful Purdies are an eclectic quintet of female multi-instrumentalists who take turns stepping up as songwriter and lead singer. Featuring Katie Roche, Nicole Upchurch, Katie Senn, Sarah Driscoll, Marcy Rosenbaum, and a host of instruments ranging from the mandolin to the penny whistle, the Awful Purdies recently celebrated 10 years of making and sharing music together.

Each year, the City’s Historic Preservation Commission and the Friends of Historic Preservation host the Historic Preservation Recognition Program to acknowledge property owners, consultants, contractors, craftspersons, and community organizations for their preservation efforts and completion of historically appropriate projects.
