Iowa City Police respond to shots fired near Wetherby Park

On Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020, at approximately 12:55 p.m., Iowa City Police responded to Wetherby Park, 2400 Taylor Drive, following a report of shots being fired. Witnesses reported that two vehicles approached each other, a shot was fired, then the vehicles left at a high rate of speed immediately after the shooting. One vehicle was described as a lighter gold 1990s SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Suburban. The other vehicle was described as a black or dark-colored, newer SUV. There were no reports of injuries or additional information available at that time.

Animal Services seeks assistance identifying dog’s owner following bite

On Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2020, Iowa City Animal Services received notification of a person who was bitten by a dog.

According to the information provided, the bite occurred around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2020, near Court Hill Park, just south of the intersection of East Court and Westminster. The victim was bitten while attempting to breakup a fight between their leashed dog and a gold lab-type dog that was loose. The loose dog was not with an owner at the time of the incident. The dog has a full length tail, droopy ears, thicker coat, and was not wearing a collar.

Note: The Iowa City Public Library's Bookmobile service has been temporarily ended due to the rise in COVID-19 cases. The City is providing residents with this update after highlighting the Bookmobile's services in the Sustainability newsletter earlier today.

The Iowa City Public Library will scale back current services due to increasing COVID-19 infections in Johnson County. Community safety continues to be the Library priority.

Starting today, Wednesday, November 4, items will be available for pick up from the downtown Library lobby during quick visits....

Investigation of suspicious package at City Hall ends safely following evacuation and street closures

On Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2020, at approximately 2:49 p.m., an adult man approached the front desk at the Iowa City Police Department and placed a full backpack that had been padlocked shut in front of the police window. The man would not respond to the employee at the desk and left the building. Due to the suspicious nature of the item and the man’s behavior, City Hall was evacuated and the Johnson County Metro Bomb Squad was called in to assess the situation.

Small nonfarm businesses in eight Iowa counties are now eligible to apply for low‑interest federal disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration. These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by the derecho in the following primary county that occurred August. 10, 2020.

Iowa City recently partnered with ImOn Communications to provide free Wi-Fi in two City parks – Riverfront Crossings and Chauncey Swan parks. Coverage at the Chauncey Swan location will include the parking ramp, where the City hosts the popular annual Farmers Market.

“Not only will this new Wi-Fi location provide another safe place for Iowa City residents to access the Internet during the pandemic,” stated Ashley Monroe, Assistant City Manager, “it will also be a great addition to the parks and the Farmers Market when we are able to gather there again safely.”

This year, the Iowa City Holiday Market will be held one day only, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020, at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center, 220 S. Gilbert Street.

Attendees can expect many of the same holiday vendors as in the past, but some changes will be made this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
