Public input sought for new playground at Scott Park

The City of Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department is seeking the public's input on a new playground and shelter at Scott Park, 540 S. Scott Boulevard.

The Scott Park picnic shelter and playground are scheduled for renovations in 2020. The intention is to replace the shelter with a design specified in the 2017 Iowa City Park Master Plan. No changes are anticipated to Rita's Ranch Off-leash Dog Park, trails, athletic fields, stream bank, or parking lot.

Road Closure – Linn Street

Weather permitting, beginning on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at 7 am; South Linn Street will be closed to through traffic between Burlington Street and College Street for roughly three hours.

This closure will facilitate sidewalk replacement associated with the Pedestrian Mall Improvements Project. It is anticipated that normal traffic will resume on Tuesday August 13, 2019 at 10 am.

Motorists are to take note of this construction and seek an alternate route during this time period. As always, caution should be exercised when traveling in all construction areas.

Four to three-lane conversion to begin Tuesday on Mormon Trek

Crews will be making safety improvements to Mormon Trek Boulevard from Westside Drive to Melrose Avenue beginning Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019, by converting the road from a four-lane road to a three lanes.

Construction

Beginning Tuesday, crews will be replacing pavement markings to officially convert the stretch of road from four to three lanes. This will cause lane reductions, but traffic will be maintained at all times. The markings are expected to be finished by Friday, Aug. 16.

City increases emissions goals to combat climate change

On Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019, the Iowa City City Council unanimously passed a resolution that increased the City's goals for reducing carbon emissions within the City.

The resolution, which declared a climate crisis for the City, matched the latest goals from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which are to reduce carbon emissions by 45% from 2010 levels by 2030, and reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The resolution called for "immediate and accelerated action" to decrease emissions community-wide.

The Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department has announced the schedule for the final days of the City Park Pool season.

City Park Pool regularly opens for Memorial Day and closes after Labor Day. The pool's last day this year will be Labor Day: Sept. 2, 2019. The full schedule for the last two weekends is as follows:

The free summer lunch program for any child age 1-18 will continue for over two more weeks at the Iowa City Senior Center.

Free lunch will be served from noon to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at the Senior Center, 28 S. Linn St., until Wed. Aug. 21, 2019.

During the week of July 29, 2019, crew members for the Ped Mall Improvements Project continued installing pavers from the playground to the Iowa City Public Library’ west entrance.

Crews plan to place PCC sub slab from the west Library entrance to Linn Street by the end of this week (Friday, Aug. 9). This will allow the west entrance into the Pedestrian Mall to reopen.
