The artists behind the Downtown Iowa City sonic art installation "The Parking Spaces" will be a part of a panel discussion to give insights on their unique public art project.

The discussion begins at 5 p.m. July 18, 2022, inside Meeting Room A at the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St. Learn more about the panel at the Library's website.

Downtown Block Party road closures, transit changes announced

The City has announced the road closures and transit changes for the Downtown Block Party on Saturday, June 25, 2022.

The Downtown Block Party is a yearly celebration organized by the Iowa City Downtown District. This sprawling Downtown event is fun for the entire family, and features live music, games like tennis and sand volleyball, activities like giant chess and video games, a silent disco, and much more. The party runs from 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday.

Transit Alert: Lower Muscatine (Route 5) detour begins August 17

Effective on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2022, the 5-Lower Muscatine bus route will be detouring due to road work on Lower Muscatine Road between South First Avenue to Highway 6.

The outbound stops located at Earl May (stop 7214) and Lower Muscatine Avenue and Fairmeadows Blvd. (stop 7108); and the inbound stops located at Fairmeadows Blvd. and Lower Muscatine Avenue (stop 7218) and Eastdale Plaza (stop 7134) will be closed for the duration of the project.

Passengers who use the affected stops are advised to use the McDonald’s stops (7102 and 7219) or the Fairmeadows and Hollywood...

City of Iowa City administrative offices and other facilities will be closed Monday, July 4, 2022, in observance of the 4th of July holiday.

The City's annual fireworks display will take place after 9:30 p.m. Saturday, July 2, 2022, at the University of Iowa Old Capitol Museum as part Iowa City Jazz Festival, presented by the Summer of the Arts.

4th of July closures and schedule adjustments:

Airport: The office will be closed, but Jet Air will be open from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and 24-hour self-serve fuel will be available.

Due to public safety concerns, the use of fireworks inside city limits is prohibited, and violators can face a minimum $250 fine.

Why can I buy fireworks in Iowa City, but not use them here?

Changes to state law in 2017, and most recently the 2022 State Legislature session, prevent cities from prohibiting or restricting locations for the sale of fireworks, but does allow counties and cities to determine their own regulations regarding the use of consumer fireworks.

Currently, there is no swimming permitted at Terry Trueblood Recreational Area, 579 McCollister Blvd. This advisory is due to the level of E. Coli detected in Sand Lake and will last indefinitely until water quality improves.

Iowa City Police serve warrant connected to recent shooting incidents

On Thursday, June 16, 2022, at approximately 7:45 a.m., the Iowa City Metro Special Response Team served a search warrant related to recent shooting incidents at 1019 Carver Street. In order to protect both the public and responding officers, two armored vehicles were used to serve the warrant.

The warrant was served without incident and this is an on-going, active investigation. No further information regarding potential criminal charges or items seized will be released at this time.

Iowa City Pride road closures announced for June 18

The City has announced road closures for the Iowa City Pride festival and parade on Saturday, June 18, 2022.

Road closures will begin at 6 a.m. Saturday to allow festival vendors to set up. The following roads will be closed:

Linn Street from Iowa Avenue to the Linn Street alley just north of the Iowa City Public Library. Washington Street from Dubuque to Linn streets.

On-street parking will not be allowed on these streets starting at 6 a.m. until the festival has concluded, which will be late Saturday night.

Johnson County Direct Assistance Program application appeal process to take place through June 23

The Johnson County Direct Assistance Program application appeal process began on Monday, June 13, and will end at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2022.

The appeal process is for applicants who need to provide additional documentation or information to be considered eligible for the program. All individuals who applied for the program have received notification of the status of their application through the email address they submitted when they applied.
