Bitterly cold temperatures are forecasted into Friday and will likely reappear throughout the winter. Iowa City Animal Services would like to remind the community that if temperatures are too cold for humans to be out in long, they're likely too cold for your pets, too.

Beginning Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, Iowa City Transit will introduce four electric buses to the streets of Iowa City, purchased with the assistance of a $3.3 million in Federal Transit Administration and Iowa DOT grants. As part of several major changes to Iowa City Transit in the past year, this launch will have an immediate environmental impact. The buses will be able to travel over 300 miles on a single charge. They also run more quietly than a diesel bus, drastically reducing noise pollution.

Public Art Matching Fund Program now accepting applications

Beginning Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022, matching funds of up to $3,000 for public arts projects will be available to local artists, the City of Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) announced.

Crews will remove snow in Downtown Iowa City overnight Monday, Jan. 17, 2022, beginning at 2 a.m. Vehicles parked in tow-away zones will be removed.

Towing will impact Prentiss Street to Market Street, Madison Street to Gilbert Street, as well as N. Clinton Street from Market Street to Church Street. The parking in these areas are metered spots, which do not permit parking from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. Follow all posted parking signs to prevent your vehicle from being towed.

The 10 - West Iowa City bus route has been detoured due to snowy road conditions.

The route will temporarily bypass the off-peak loop serving Coll Drive, Jensen Street, Irving Avenue, and Shannon Drive, due to slick conditions and buses getting stuck. Updates will be provided.

Yard waste/organics materials placed at the curb on Friday, Jan. 14, 2022, will not be collected.

Due to the winter weather advisory, the collection of the yellow-lid yard waste/organics carts will be suspended to divert all staff for garbage/recycling collection. This will help garbage collection staff complete their routes prior to the snowstorm.

Organics/yard waste normally collected on Jan. 14 will be collected on Jan. 21, 2021.

Mercer Park Aquatic Center to reopen Jan. 17; updated hours announced for City's indoor pools

After an extensive dehumidification project at Mercer Park Aquatic Center, the facility is planned to reopen to the public on Monday, Jan. 17, 2022.

Along with the reopening, hours for both Robert A. Lee Recreation Center and Mercer Park pools have been updated. Pool schedules at both facilities now include hours listed as ‘open’ rather than designated for a specific type of swim activity. Sections of each pool will be signed for the appropriate use.
