Iowa City Police Department reminds motorists to drive sober this Fourth of July

This Fourth of July, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is working with law enforcement nationwide to reduce impaired driving with the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. NHTSA and the Iowa City Police Department are sharing this reminder for all drivers: If you plan to drink alcohol, plan ahead for a sober driver. Even one or two alcoholic drinks can cause impairment. The goal is to save lives during what is usually one of the deadliest holidays on our roads.

National Night Out will take place Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2022, and the City of Iowa City wants to hear from neighborhoods that would like to participate in the celebration.

National Night Out is an annual celebration that encourages neighbors to get out of their homes, interact with each other and create connections to foster safer neighborhoods. Some Iowa City neighborhoods have hosted special events featuring food, cool beverages, family-friendly activities, and appearances by Iowa City Police Officers and Firefighters.

Traffic Alert – Rochester Avenue

Rochester Avenue Reconstruction Project

Weather permitting, beginning on Thursday, June 30, 2022, lanes of traffic will be shifted at various locations during daylight hours on Rochester Avenue between Montrose Avenue and Windsor Drive.

This traffic pattern change will accommodate the relocation of communication lines for an upcoming road construction project. It is anticipated that this work will be completed by Friday, July 8, 2022.

Jazz Festival road closures and transit changes announced

The City will be closing multiple streets Friday, July 1, through Sunday, July 3, 2022, for the Iowa City Jazz Festival.

The annual jazz festival organized by the Summer of the Arts brings over a dozen of the world's best jazz musicians to Downtown Iowa City for a three-day music festival. The City's firework show will take place after 9:30 p.m. Saturday on the Pentacrest, after the last performance of the day.

Downtown Block Party road closures, transit changes announced

The City has announced the road closures and transit changes for the Downtown Block Party on Saturday, June 25, 2022.

The Downtown Block Party is a yearly celebration organized by the Iowa City Downtown District. This sprawling Downtown event is fun for the entire family, and features live music, games like tennis and sand volleyball, activities like giant chess and video games, a silent disco, and much more. The party runs from 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday.

Transit Alert: Lower Muscatine (Route 5) detour begins August 17

Effective on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2022, the 5-Lower Muscatine bus route will be detouring due to road work on Lower Muscatine Road between South First Avenue to Highway 6.

The outbound stops located at Earl May (stop 7214) and Lower Muscatine Avenue and Fairmeadows Blvd. (stop 7108); and the inbound stops located at Fairmeadows Blvd. and Lower Muscatine Avenue (stop 7218) and Eastdale Plaza (stop 7134) will be closed for the duration of the project.

Passengers who use the affected stops are advised to use the McDonald’s stops (7102 and 7219) or the Fairmeadows and Hollywood...
