Instinctively, cats know the benefits of stretching. As humans, we could incorporate more of it into our daily lives. The Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center is teaming up with Jazzercise Iowa City Fitness Center to offer a special mat-based stretching class -- Cats & Mats -- on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016 at 4 p.m. The class will be held at the Jazzercise Iowa City Fitness Center, 1010 S. Gilbert Street.

During this fun class, participants will work through strength and stretching routines while kittens from the Animal Center are released in the studio. Playing with the kittens and incorporating them into the routines will be highly encouraged.

“I’ve adopted three kittens from the Iowa City Animal Center and have a soft spot in my heart for the animals and people there,” says Kristi Bontrager, owner of the Jazzercise Iowa City Fitness Center. “I thought it would be fun to bring people together with kittens during a stretching class. I know I love getting down on the floor with my own cats while I prepare to teach my classes.”

Tickets for the class are $20 and all proceeds go to the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation. Participants can register online at

“We are excited to partner with Kristi and Jazzercise for this fundraising class,” said Liz Ford, Supervisor for the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. “We get such good support from the Iowa City community and this is just another way for us to bring adoptable animals to people. Plus, we thought it would be great fun!”

Space is limited. Participants should bring a mat, but are asked to leave their own cats at home. Only kittens from the Iowa City Animal Center will be participating in the class.

If you are unable to attend the event but still want to make an impact, you can donate directly to animal care through the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation at
