On Sunday, June 6, 2021, at approximately 1:36 a.m., an Iowa City Police Officer in a marked patrol vehicle was driving in the 1900 Block of Broadway Street when they heard multiple gunshots, with one of the shots ricocheting in front of the patrol vehicle. The officer then saw a person running to the south, away from the area of Hwy 6. The officer could not see where the shots were fired from, but was able to immediately locate the person who had been running. The adult male was found in the parking lot of the Pepperwood Plaza, located in the 1900 Block of Broadway Street, and was suffering from three gunshot wounds. The officer pulled the man to cover in order to render aid until responding officers could arrive and safely have the victim evacuated to paramedics.

The shooting victim told responding officers he did not know who shot him or why they were shooting at him. Officers located evidence on scene, but were not able to locate a shooter/s. The victim was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with what is believed to be non-life- threatening injuries.
