One of the great fall traditions in Iowa City - the annual University of Iowa Homecoming Parade - will be back in Downtown Iowa City on Friday, Oct. 28, 2022.

The parade will begin at 5:45 p.m., so be aware of related street closures, parking restrictions, and changes to the City's transit routes earlier in the day.

On Saturday, October 29, 2022, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Johnson County residents can properly dispose of unwanted or outdated pharmaceuticals and needles. The event will be held in the parking lot of the East Side Recycling Center at 2401 Scott Blvd. SE.

Organizations interested in applying for the City's Racial Equity and Social Justice Grant for 2023 can attend one of two informational sessions. Both sessions are being held virtually via Zoom.

The sessions will provide an opportunity to learn about the purpose, process, and timeline for the grant. Participants will also receive useful tips on filling out the application. A question-and-answer session will follow.

The City is looking for artists to design and paint a massive 12-foot-tall, 300-foot-long mural along an Iowa City Airport hanger facing South Riverside Drive.

The Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee and the Iowa City Airport Commission are seeking artists to submit their qualifications for the project; the deadline is Nov. 14, 2022.

The Iowa City Police Department has identified the victim in the Oct. 23, 2022, homicide investigation as Waymond Thomas, 36, of Iowa City. This remains an active investigation and the police department encourages all members of the public with information - particularly camera footage - to contact the department.

Transit Notice: Outbound 5 Lower Muscatine bus detour; Fairmeadows (7215), The Quarters (7215) will not be serviced

Beginning Wednesday, Oct,, 19, 2022, the 5 Lower Muscatine bus will detour outbound turning left from Lower Muscatine road onto Highway 1 then turning right from Highway 1 onto Lakeside Drive. Outbound stops at Fairmeadows Blvd (stop 7215) and at The Quarters (stop 7216) will not be serviced. Inbound Lower Muscatine route is normal. Passengers missing affected stops can still get on and off at alternative stops, The Quarters inbound (Stop7217) and Hollywood Blvd and Fairmeadows (stop 8232).

This change is expected to last until Monday, Oct. 31, weather dependent.
